A Comprehensive Guide on How to Recover the Deleted Items from a PST File

Did you accidentally delete your files? Did you just press SHIFT+DELETE? Have you emptied your files by mistake? If the answer is yes, then don’t worry as we have discussed the methods to recover the deleted items from a PST file. This blog entails the details to recover the deleted items from a PST file by using a professional and safe PST Recovery tool.

How Does the Delete Items Folder Works In The Outlook?

In a PST, the items are stored and there is an index that indicates each item of the folder. Once you delete the files, Outlook does not delete the files permanently and it only deletes from the index. The items are still located in the PST, however, it is unrecoverable as Microsoft Outlook cannot locate it without a pointer in the index. Space, where the item is located, is known as ‘White space’.

Once you ‘Compact’ a PST, the items are permanently deleted and the white space is retrieved and the PST diminishes by megabytes. When the PST has around 20 % white space, the Outlook initiates compacting the PST. If the Deleted Items Folder has many items, then Outlook starts compacting the PST instantly and the files get deleted permanently in just a few minutes.

To retrieve the items which are not located on the index, you need to restore the index again by corrupting the files. You can corrupt the files by using the Hex Editor to remove the characters of the PST file. Ensure that you delete the right ones as deleting the wrong ones will not help you restore the index again.

Below we have mentioned a few steps to retrieve the deleted items:

  • Locate the PST Files
  • To locate the PST files stored on the system, you need to open the file and go to data management.
  • Select the files you need and click on ‘Open File Location’ to use the PST files.
  • Now, copy the files and paste them in a safe location on the hard drive.

  • Corrupt the PST Files

Open the PST files you just copied by using the Hex Editor. You will notice columns and rows of letters and numbers. It is called hexadecimal characters and to corrupt the PST files, you need to make the changes to these values to get the desired result. You simply have to locate 7 to 13 hexadecimal positions and using the space bar, you have to delete the values below 7 to 13. Once you do this step, don’t forget to save the PST file and exit from the Hex Editor.

  • Start by locating and highlighting the positions from 7 to 13.
  • Now, go to Edit and ‘Fill Selection’.
  • Then, enter ‘00’ and click on ‘OK’.
  • Now, save and exit the application.
